For Women’s Rights in the Shadow of War

Categories: Result Ukraine

D.O.M.48.24 is a Ukrainian organisation working, with support from IM, to protect and empower women and girls in vulnerable situations. Through its extensive work in crisis response, education, and social entrepreneurship, the organisation has become an invaluable resource for many. And as the war drags on, the need for its services grows by the day.

IM has been a long-term partner of D.O.M.48.24 – their collaboration began even before Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Since its founding in 2015, the organisation has provided legal counselling, psychological support, and material assistance to women and children affected by violence and crisis.

A safe haven in times of crisis

When daily life collapsed for many in Ukraine, D.O.M.48.24 remained. Through its crisis response work, it has become a place of refuge for women and children exposed to violence and abuse – a reality that has worsened significantly in the wake of war. In 2024 alone, the organisation has handled hundreds of cases, ranging from domestic violence to a concerning rise in suicidal tendencies among children. For those affected, support is available – from legal aid and psychological assistance to practical help in seeking safety and reporting perpetrators.

D.O.M.48.24 also organises anonymous online meetings for women, with psychologists present. These sessions provide a safe and confidential space to openly discuss issues such as sexual harassment and gender-based violence.

One participant from a support group for survivors of violence shared her experience:

“Knowing that I am not alone has given me strength. I have found a network of women here who truly understand and support me.”

Knowledge that changes lives

Spreading awareness is a key part of D.O.M.48.24’s work. Thanks to IM’s support, the organisation has been able to educate hundreds of people on gender-based violence and women’s rights. Universities, schools, and vocational institutions have become hubs for young people to discuss feminism, consent, and leadership. Police officers, social workers, and school psychologists have also received training in areas such as suicide prevention, negotiation techniques, and self-defence.

Opportunities for a fresh start

Financial independence can be the key to a safer life. D.O.M.48.24 is committed to helping women gain economic security through social entrepreneurship. In collaboration with local businesses, they provide training in beauty therapy and business networking, and they run a laundry service that creates employment for vulnerable groups.

“I never thought I could start over, but this course gave me the confidence and skills to launch my own business,” says a woman who is now internally displaced in Ukraine and participated in a vocational training programme in beauty therapy.

A strong voice in society

D.O.M.48.24 does not stop at providing direct support – it is also driving change at a structural level. The organisation has participated in meetings with the UN Special Rapporteur and the Executive Board of UN Women. Through advocacy and media engagement, they ensure that women’s voices are heard, even at the highest political levels.

Our common fight continues

M and D.O.M.48.24 share a long history, and we will not leave their side. In times of war and crisis, our support is more crucial than ever. Together, we are building a future where women and girls can live free from violence, with rights, security, and opportunities.
