Where we work
IM acts together with partner organizations all over the world. Our operations are based in Lund. In Sweden we also have local branches and members. In all parts of the world where we operate, we work together with local, national, and regional actors. This enables us to respond in the best possible way to the needs and conditions that exist.
Central America
El Salvador
In El Salvador, we work for women’s right to control their own bodies, including by raising awareness about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and opposing the country’s strict abortion laws. The country is also the starting point for the initiative Humanium Metal by IM, where confiscated illegal weapons are melted down and repurposed into new usable metal. The proceeds go back to individuals and communities affected by armed violence, and the initiative also serves as a platform for a global anti-violence movement.
Central America
Guatemala
In Guatemala, we work to ensure that vulnerable people have the opportunity to organize and make their voices heard by those in power. We collaborate with organizations and partners that support women’s livelihoods, advocate for girls’ right to education instead of early marriage, defend LGBTQ+ rights, and strengthen Indigenous peoples’ land rights. We also support people with disabilities in achieving independence and better living conditions.
Middle East
Jordan
In Jordan, IM collaborates with organizations and networks that strive to increase opportunities for women and young people with disabilities to claim their economic, social, and political rights. Everyone should have the right to support themselves, access healthcare, and participate in society. IM also works with national and local civil society organizations to safeguard civic space and strengthen democratic development.
Middle East
Palestine
Young people make up approximately 33 percent of Palestine’s population. As a result of Israel’s prolonged occupation and internal divisions, their lives are marked by violence and oppression. IM seeks to address these challenges by empowering young people to drive change themselves, thereby building a strong civil society where everyone is socially and economically included. This is also a way to counter the strict surveillance that makes it difficult for democratic forces to operate in the country.
South Asia
India
In India, IM supports small-scale income-generating projects and fair trade initiatives. We also work to strengthen women’s rights and their opportunities to participate in decision-making. As the space for people to mobilize and advocate for their rights is shrinking, a key part of our work is to strengthen grassroots organizations to promote a democratic and vibrant civil society.
South Asia
Nepal
In Nepal, child marriage and early pregnancies are common, especially in rural areas where poverty is widespread. IM works to empower girls and women to take control of their bodies and their lives. We also support income-generating activities, such as savings and loan groups, and provide youth with education and training to improve their job opportunities. Through our collaboration with grassroots organizations, we contribute knowledge and networks to strengthen democratic development efforts.
Southern Africa
Malawi
To strengthen the position of girls and women and prevent child marriage in Malawi, IM focuses on girls’ education and women’s livelihoods. Several of IM’s partners work with village committees, parent and youth groups to raise awareness about children’s and women’s rights and how harmful traditions, such as initiation rites, negatively impact the entire society.
Southern Africa
Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe, IM works with partners to ensure that young people gain knowledge about their bodies, their rights, and the importance of education. We strive to empower women to support themselves, despite the challenges posed by prejudice and outdated structures. A significant focus is also placed on children with disabilities and their families.
Eastern Europe
Moldova
IM’s work in Moldova focuses on people with disabilities and marginalized youth. We collaborate with local organizations based in rural areas and smaller towns to create sustainable change on individual, community, and structural levels—making Moldova a country for everyone, regardless of ability.
Eastern Europe
Ukraine
In Ukraine, IM works with local civil society organizations to support those most vulnerable in the war. Women, families, internally displaced people, and individuals with disabilities receive assistance to cope with daily life in the war-torn country. A major focus is on protecting and supporting women affected by gender-based violence as a result of the war.
Northern Europe
Sweden
In Sweden we work to build a strong civil society. We work for democracy and inclusion and act as a feminist and anti-racist agent. We conduct activities like language cafés and support services for immigrants, but we also fund grass root organizations and activists who work with for example democracy, human rights and climate justice.
